Hi, Friend.
I’m home at last for a few days! Within 15 minutes of walking in the door, I was covered in dog kisses and eating potato chips in my robe. The universe was righted.
The audiences have been so lovely on this book tour for You Could Make This Place Beautiful, and the conversants have been a dream. Over the weekend I was in Milwaukee at Boswell Book Company with Erika Meitner, in Chicago at Women & Children First with Megan Stielstra, and in Kansas City at Rainy Day Books with Traci Brimhall.
I feel so lucky to have writers I admire engaging with the book so deeply, and being so generous with their time. Moderating events is like blurbing books: a form of literary citizenship. Thank you to all of the writers who are joining me at these events; it means the world. And between the conversations themselves and the audience Q&As, I’ve been asked some really insightful questions over the past 10 days.
In Kansas City on Sunday, Traci Brimhall’s absolutely delightful nine-year-old son had a question: “How does it feel to have a book in the world?” When asked how he imagined it would feel, his answer was perfect: “Proud and scared.”
Check and check. From the mouths of babes.
Here are several other terrific questions I’ve been asked at book events, and my responses.
